Tadao Ando

Architect · Japan

A self-taught architect from Osaka whose work made smooth, board-formed concrete into an instrument for light. Ando treats a wall less as structure than as a way of framing time — the slow travel of a sunbeam across a room.

His buildings ask for patience: enclosure first, then a single, deliberate opening. The result feels closer to a garden than to a machine.
